Summary/Abstract: The paper explores Arnold Böcklin’s painting Triton and Nereid, created between 1873 and 1874, examining its composition, themes, and symbolism. The primary aim of the research is to contextualize this work within the broader framework of 19th-century European art influenced by Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theories and contemporary scientific discourse. Böcklin’s depiction of hybrid mythological beings is analyzed as an allegorical visualization of the “missing link” in the chain of evolution, bridging the gap between primitive life forms and modern humanity. The methodology involves an interdisciplinary approach that integrates art historical analysis with scientific and cultural studies. By studying Böcklin’s use of anthropomorphic and zoological elements, the research sheds light on his ability to reconcile artistic creativity with evolving scientific thought. Additionally, the paper situates Triton and Nereid within Böcklin’s broader artistic production, emphasizing his focus on mythological and allegorical subjects as vehicles for exploring complex themes such as human origin, nature’s continuity, and the interplay between mythology and science. The study concludes that Triton and Nereid occupies a unique position in Böcklin’s oeuvre, showcasing his innovative approach to visualizing evolutionary concepts. Furthermore, it highlights how this painting exemplifies the broader cultural currents of the 19th century, where art and science converged to address existential and philosophical questions. This work not only enhances our understanding of Böcklin’s artistic legacy but also contributes to discussions on the intersection of art and evolutionary theory in European cultural history.
