Summary/Abstract: The article concerns a review of the methodology for researching the pronunciation of nasal vowels written as ą and ę in Polish sociolinguistics of the second half of the 20th century. The review concerns primarily research on the speech of urban residents and subsequent studies that are their continuation. It is important to look for preliminary assumptions in the selection of the group of respondents, the results obtained and the postulates for the future formulated by scientists. The large difference between the norm and the usage in modern pronunciation indicates the need to repeat the research. The following issues are highlighted in the text: official and unofficial pronunciation, text read in pronunciation research, generational groups in sociophonetic research, pronunciation in research on actors and priests, pronunciation of city residents from the perspective of group selection (generation, age, education, profession, origin, etc.). The aim of the article is to indicate the achievements and methodological gaps of past research and to draw attention to various possibilities of profiling research. The article did not refer to research on the norm of Polish pronunciation, but on usage depending on many sociolinguistic variables. The text signals that it is worth considering the achievements of contemporary text research. Taking into account one speech genre in a specific sociolinguistic situation may help to obtain homogeneous linguistic material for studying the pronunciation of various speakers.
