Summary/Abstract: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in the coastal Swedish culture and heritage in the former Swedish speaking areas (called Aiboland, a poetic ethnic name). Numerous events have been organized, with the most media attention given to the revived Estonian-Swedish song and dance festival tradition. Additionally, people living in or connected to the coastal Swedish cultural area have developed an interest in learning the Swedish language. In 2021, Tallinn University and the Cultural Autonomy Body of Estonian-Swedish launched the project “Rannarootsi rootsikeelseks” (“Let’s turn Aiboland to Swedish-speaking”), aiming to offer Swedish language courses to all interested parties in the former coastal Swedish regions. This article provides an overview of the Swedish language courses held in the context of the project in Tallinn, Vormsi, Ruhnu, and Noarootsi, as well as the electronic Swedish language learning materials developed as part of the project.
