Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on English use in Estonian podcasts and vlogs. Previous studies have primarily analyzed English language usage within the same genre; however, this article focuses on comparing two different spoken datasets. In total, the language use of eight podcasts (total of nine hours of footage, published in 2023) and 10 vlogs (total of 13,5 hours of footage, published in 2018–2022) has been analyzed. All recordings were transcribed, and English copies and code-alternations were labeled. Then, the two datasets were compared both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that copying is more intense and extensive in vlogs than in podcasts: there are 21 copies in vlogs and 12 in podcasts per 1,000 words and 3.2 and 0.3 code-alternations respectively. However, the tendencies are quite similar: global copies heavily prevail in both datasets, this is followed by selective and then mixed copies. The main reasons for copying are semantic specificity (e.g. to fill a gap), prominence at pragmatic level (e.g. to direct the discourse), expressiveness (e.g. for strong emotions) and idiomacy, also semantic and pragmatic extension.
