Summary/Abstract: Modern surveillance no longer relies on physical confinement, but it’s built, as a complex mechanism, on a control society that is no longer centralized. AI, using algorithms, convert biometric data, thus helping maintain the functioning of a highly efficient system that aims to determine real time behavior monitoring and modification. Processes like using scraped data to efficiently analyze facts from the past to retroactively track individual’s actions produce a chilling effect that determine them to self-censor. This helps eliminate social dissent but also creates a feedback loop that restricts freedom of expression and assembly. There are multiple regulatory approaches to biometric surveillance. For instance, allowing exceptions for remote biometric identification when a situation requires it, a latent surveillance infrastructure needs to remain available for activation at any time. Strict legal boundaries are necessary to protect fundamental human rights, to act as a counterbalance to the high efficiency of these automated intelligent control systems.
