Summary/Abstract: As I mentioned on another occasion, when we speak about inheritance law, the first image that takes shape is that of something very old and, above all, very conservative. In addition, it is something that constantly reminds us of death and its consequences. It is certainly not only the most conservative part of civil law, but also one of the areas that most deeply reflects and integrates the traditions and customs of the country whose legal system it serves—indeed, the character and “way of being” of the nation to which it belongs. Perhaps this is also because it is the branch of law that most profoundly reflects the family. It tells us what the family ought to be. Even though the deceased (the author of the inheritance) appears in the foreground, the ones to whom inheritance law is actually addressed are, as a rule, his descendants—his family.
