The Interpretation of František Minorita on False Prophets

Summary/Abstract: The study presents a previously unknown interpretation of the Gospel passage Attendite a falsis prophetis from the postil of Franciscan preacher Francis, who was active at the end of the 14th century. In it, the author warns against false prophets and their deceptive piety. The interpretation combines biblical quotations with moral and allegorical interpretations in the spirit of late medieval spirituality, which emphasizes personal piety based on harmony between one’s inner disposition and outward manifestations. In comparison with the sermon Attendite a falsis prophetis by Milíč of Kroměříž, it points to the similarity of thematic lines and the difference in the author’s treatment. An integral part of the contribution is a transcription of Francis‘s interpretation according to a manuscript source. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of moral-exegetical works in Bohemia at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries.
