Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on the reception of St. Bonaventure’s thought among early modern Capuchins, with particular emphasis on the work of Valerian Magni. It shows that the widespread notion of Bonaventure as the unambiguous “theologian of the order” of the Capuchins requires clarification. As a theological authority in the 16th and 17th centuries, Bonaventure was often interpreted by the Capuchins in connection with Thomas Aquinas, and attempts to harmonize him with Thomism were common. In addition, however, Bonaventure had primarily spiritual and formative significance for the Capuchins, with an emphasis on Christocentrism, the theology of the cross, and mystical theology. Valerian Magni does not follow the scholastic use of Bonaventure and builds on and his significance for spirituality only partially. An analysis of Magni’s work De luce mentium et eius imagine shows a specific, selective reception of Bonaventure, focused on Itinerarium mentis in Deum, from which Magni takes the metaphysics of light and the introspective conception of knowledge. Magni’s “Bonaventurism” thus appears as a philosophical reinterpretation of the Augustinian-Bonaventurian tradition close to early modern rationalism.
