Ordo sapientiae: Philosophy according to the Epitome Dindimi in philosophiam of Hugh of St. Victor

Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the lesser-known treatise Epitome Dindimi in philosophiam by Hugh of Saint Victor. Composed in the form of an ancient-style dialogue, the work presents a pedagogical exchange between teacher and student intended to provide a systematic overview of philosophy, to prepare students for the study of its individual disciplines, and to guide their progression toward advanced theological study. The dialogue explores key ontological and epistemological issues, the division of philosophy, and the proper subject matter and sequence of the philosophical sciences. In doing so, it unfolds the internal order of philosophy—both as a hierarchical structure of the disciplines and as a pedagogical path by which the soul ascends toward wisdom and the knowledge of truth.
