Summary/Abstract: It is hard to resist the pull of autobiographical memory: I was not yet twenty when I arrived in Rome to begin my theological studies—on the afternoon of October 11, 1962, to be exact. I was present in the vast crowd in St. Peter’s Square that listened to what is now Saint John XXIII’s famous “speech of the moon,” just as I was among those who, three years later, on December 8, 1965, took part in the solemn closing ceremony presided over by Paul VI. Not to mention the various occasions on which—having received episcopal permission—I attended several council sessions as an observer and followed the interventions of the council fathers.
