Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the concept of the nest as reflected in the contemporary Russian literary language and culture by cross-referencing data from various lexicographic sources. It analyzes the meanings of the lexeme gnezdo (‘nest’) with the aim of identifying the motivation behind the transfer of the name to various referents, i.e., the extension of its meaning through the mechanisms of metaphor and metonymy. At the same time, the study highlights aspects of the nest as a physical object that have contributed to the lexeme’s capacity to become polysemous and to enter the corpus of culturally significant terms. The results of the analysis serve as a foundation for a more detailed description of the lexeme gnezdo and for the reconstruction of a segment of the Russian linguistic worldview.
