SEMANTICS AND NEUROLINGUISTICS: HOW OUR BRAIN REPRESENTS AND CONSTRUCTS THE MEANING

Summary/Abstract: This paper points to some new methods for studying brain activity during speech and listening (primarily the ERP method, event-related potential), with a special emphasis on the structures responsible for generating and analyzing the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. The goal is to discover to what extent the current semantic and pragmatic hypotheses are confirmed by neurolinguistic experiments. We particularly emphasize the opinion obtained by examining healthy people as well as those with acquired or congenital linguistic deficits, which states that the brain is a prediction machine, which functions by trying to guess the next word or to imagine a phrase or sentence that contains the linguistic unit it is currently processing.
