Summary/Abstract: This study investigates student cheating behaviors, the role of artificial intelligence in facilitating academic dishonesty, and the underlying motivations behind such conduct among students at a technical university. It also explores students’ perceptions of what constitutes “excusable” versus “inexcusable” reasons for cheating and evaluates strategies aimed at preventing dishonest practices. The findings reveal that cheating is a widespread phenomenon, often supported by digital tools such as mobile phones, the internet, and AI-based applications. Students frequently attributed their behavior to external pressures, including demanding course structures and limited time, suggesting that cheating is often perceived as a coping mechanism. While students recognized the existence of institutional deterrents, such as plagiarism detection systems, a considerable number were still willing to take risks. According to students, improving academic support, ensuring fairness in assessment, and enforcing rules consistently could effectively promote academic integrity and reduce dishonest behaviour.
