Summary/Abstract: This study examines the position, role, and historical development of Hungarian literary sociography based on the experiences of Hungarian literature and public life in Vojvodina. It argues that sociography, as one of the most important genres of reality-oriented literature, was long marginalized due to the dominance of prevailing literary trends, particularly the avant-garde. Through personal reflections and literary-historical examples, the author demonstrates how literature addressing collective existential issues, grounded in factual inquiry and moral commitment, became peripheral, and how the conditions for its rehabilitation gradually emerged. The study emphasizes that literary sociography is not merely a documentary genre but an indispensable means of community self-knowledge, cultural survival, and social responsibility. It contends that sociography represents a potential path for the renewal of contemporary Hungarian literature, enabling a deeper exploration of social reality and the restoration of literature’s moral credibility.
