Summary/Abstract: Pastoral supervision represents an important supportive tool for both the professional and personal development of those working in helping professions, offering a suitable space for the enhancement of life-management skills. Within the helping vocation, questions often arise concerning professional identity, the balance between work and private life, coping with crises, and the preservation and strengthening of personal resources. Supervision can reveal hidden motives of the helping role, such as the need for significance, the search for psychological growth, the desire for autonomy, overcoming loneliness, or the experience of control. Excessive involvement, an idealistic “world-saving” attitude, or a sense of omnipotence, however, may lead to the development of the helper syndrome, which poses a serious risk to both personal well-being and professional effectiveness. Signs of this syndrome include difficulties in setting boundaries, workaholism, accumulation of unmet needs, rigidity, and frequent relational problems. Pastoral supervision therefore plays a crucial role in fostering awareness, self-reflection, and life-management skills, all of which contribute to a healthier and more balanced practice of the helping profession.
