Summary/Abstract: Memorial museums have a special place in the museum system of the Republic of Moldova. Most of these institutions are dedicated to outstanding persons, but there are also museums holding collections related to certain historical events. It is important to understand the role and place of a memorial museum in modern society and to establish how this institution can serve the public good. In this context, the author defines the concepts of a memorial museum and public interest, analyzes them through the prism of heritage legislation and argues the reasons for choosing this topic. After all, a memorial museum is a special type of museum institution, it has its own specific features and dual nature, being both a historical monument and a cultural institution. Every nation needs its heroes, legends, reflected in museum expositions that are created by and within the community. Public interest in perpetuating the memory of certain historical figures serves as an argument for making decisions on the creation of new museums. In the case of this type of institution, it is not only a question of national interest, but also of the interests of a specific community, since most memorial museums are located in the provinces. The study focuses on three areas: the state and public interest, public interest in memorial museums, and the role of the museologist in awakening public interest in the museum institution. Based on the analysis of surveys conducted in memorial museums, the author comes to the conclusion that the public’s attitude towards the museum is depressing and that the museum is of no public interest. This means that we should look for a way out of the impasse. Let there be fewer museums - it is time to value quality, not quantity, take into account the public interests of communities when creating memorial museums, actively promote them, since the Republic of Moldova remains a country of unknown museums. There is no public interest in supporting museums. It is time to perceive the museum and promote it not only as a place for leisure, but also as a resource for lifelong education.
