Summary/Abstract: To remember the great ruler Stephen the Great means to consider our Romanian roots, the icon of the saint canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in accordance with ancestral traditions, deeply anchored in the collective mentality of the Romanian people. The deeds of the Moldavian prince were very significant and enduring: this is evidenced by the battles in the name of Christianity, the churches he founded, the great cultural and artistic achievements of the era of his reign, historical chronicles, literary works. The first to call him a “saint” was chronicler Grigore Ureche, who claimed that the people called Stephen so “not for his soul, which is in God’s hands, but for his great deeds”. During the last two decades, the National History Museum of Romania has paid tribute to the personality of Prince Stephen the Great through thematic temporary exhibitions, organized in collaboration with other Romanian and foreign museums and institutions. The projects were carried out under the patronage of the President of Romania, the Government, and naturally, the Ministry of Culture, and had a cultural and political significance. The exhibitions were accompanied by the publication of scientific catalogues highlighting the cultural values studied by specialists, which are a genuine source of knowledge about the era of Stephen the Great. The documents, and especially the religious manuscripts from the second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the following one, represent true masterpieces of our old literature. Thus, the National History Museum of Romania has initiated a series of projects for the scientific exploration of the exceptional heritage objects from the time of the great Romanian ruler.
