Summary/Abstract: The paper examines in detail the contribution of the architect Alexei Shchusev to the construction of religious buildings in the early period of his career, when he held the position of architect of the Holy Synod of the Russian Empire. This stage of the architect’s activity was not covered in specialized sources, especially in the literature of the Soviet era, which focused on the later stages and other large-scale Shchusev’s projects. The aim of our work is to familiarize the public with the achievements of Alexei Shchusev in the field of restoration of religious architecture monuments and construction of new churches. Based on the analysis of archival documents, case studies and modern publications, we tried to recreate the historical context in which Alexei Shchusev worked, as well as to identify the stylistic and cultural aspects that influenced his work. The paper traces his role in the development of church architecture of the Russian Empire, as well as his contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage in the face of historical challenges. The study provides a valuable overview of lesser-known periods of the work of Academician Alexei Shchusev and his legacy in the field of religious architecture.
