Summary/Abstract: Household work, ranging from childcare and household maintenance to the care of de-pendent family members (hereinafter referred to as household work), constitutes an in-tegral part of economic reality, yet it remains outside official statistics and financial valuation. The aim of this article is to present and compare selected methods for deter-mining the value of such unpaid work, focusing particularly on the Czech context. Firstly, the article provides a definition of the concept of work, placing particular emphasis on household work. Subsequently, two main approaches to its valuation are described and applied, namely the replacement cost method (Approach I) and the determination of the value of such work through the use of guaranteed wages (Approach II). A model case serves to demonstrate that the chosen approach substantially affects the resulting va-luation: the difference between Approach I (CZK 28,089 per month) and Approach II (CZK 19,875 per month) is not negligible and has practical implications, for example in terms of property settlement in divorce proceedings, in the design of social transfers and the support of family policy. The discussion highlights the importance of recognising both the economic and social value of household work and the necessity to systemati-cally reflect on this issue in the academic as well as the political discourse.
