Summary/Abstract: An important source for studying various local history issues are the files concerning land disputes between various landowners, stored in the collections of the “Bessarabian Regional Civil Court” (Coll. 37) and the “Bessarabian Supreme/Regional Council” (Coll. 3) of the National Agency for Archives of the Republic of Moldova. For example, when studying the history of the village of Tabani (also known as Mlenăuţi / Mlinăuţi and Mihalcăuţi), among various cases we examined the litigation between Major Sumarokov and Captain Ioan Costache over part of the Mlenăuţi (Tabani) estate in the Khotin County. The case was initiated on January 21, 1819 and completed on November 6, 1823 (Coll. 3, aids 5, fol. 112, 197 pages). The folder contains quite valuable information about the course of the proceedings regarding the estates owned by these landowners, as well as about other persons involved in the dispute; about their official positions and boyar ranks; about the time and circumstances of the sale or exchange of estates; about the documents that the landowners had in confirmation of their rights to property; about the documents certifying their right of ownership of other estates; about the time of their entry into ownership; about the procedure for providing documents of ownership; about the officials of various administrative and judicial institutions who took part in resolving the dispute, etc.
