Summary/Abstract: The article falls within the scope of linguistic research on expressions denoting emotional states. The source material consists of Zofia Kossak’s correspondence to Zygmunt Szatkowski, a prisoner of war in Oflag (from German Offizierslager) VII-A Murnau am Stafalsee during World War II. The research aims to analyse the ways in which the author of the analysed postcards and letters communicated her emotional states. In her epistolary writing, Kossak’s emotions and feelings are often subject to hindsight description rather than expressed directly. Linguistic practice is therefore primarily intellectual in nature, manifested through the use of lexemes denoting emotions and feelings, predicative constructions, as well as through the descriptions of the causes of experiences and emotional states. The material corpus allows the thematic field emotions and feelings to be divided into the following microfields (a) negative feelings caused by separation from a loved one (person, object); (b) insecurity; and (c) feelings of contentment.
