Summary/Abstract: This article presents the lexicographic history of the lexeme obłęd (madness). The source material is Polish etymological and general dictionaries, both historical and contemporary. The history of the word obłęd in Polish begins in the 15th century. Initially, the word meant delusion, straying from the path, error or mistake. In the 19th century, a new meaning emerged, referring to mental illness and madness. Contemporary dictionaries document colloquial meanings, firstly: describing unusual or wonderful events, things, and phenomena; secondly: great confusion, confusion, and chaos and thirdly: something abnormal, something that goes beyond accepted patterns or rules.
