Lexical determinants of feelings in the creation of selected female characters in Eliza Orzeszkowa’s Nad Niemnem

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article are the ways of expressing the emotions of selected female characters – Marta Korczyńska, Justyna Orzelska and Emilia Korczyńska in Eliza Orzeszkowa’s Nad Niemnem. Emotionality in the analyzed text is expressed through the characters’ messages (statements), which are appropriately marked. Expression of emotions in Nad Niemnem takes place on two levels: 1) by communicating emotional states in Marta, Justyna and Emilia, through statements (lexemes) in which the sender speaks explicitly about his feelings, linguistic means and stylistic devices that have been used for this used; 2) the author’s description of the heroines’ non-verbal signs of joy or anger. In the article, I characterized and described two extreme emotions - anger and joy, which accompanied the heroines of Nad Niemnem.
