Summary/Abstract: This article is dedicated to the study of semantic relationships between the parts of compound sentences with a closed structure that contain adversative conjunctions, the importance of their study, and their role in the practice of teaching the Russian language. While the semantic relationships between parts of compound sentences have been extensively researched, further examination of their use in texts reveals new semantic relations, particularly in compound sentences with a closed structure. In addition to the primary semantic relationships between the parts of compound sentences, transitional/diffuse cases can also be found. Compound sentences are divided into two types: compound sentences of open and closed structure – this is the classification that modern syntactic science currently adheres to, and this classification is taught to philology students at leading universities in the Russian Federation and neighboring countries. However, the mentioned classification is not given in any school textbook of this region. The purpose of this article is to identify compound sentences of a closed structure with adversative conjunctions in a literary text, describe the semantic relationships between their parts, and provide a typology. This analytical approach will undoubtedly contribute to the development of linguistic intuition in students – both native and non-native speakers of Russian – and, in our view, should be integrated into the teaching of Russian as a foreign language at the advanced level.
