Summary/Abstract: The significant number of legends associated with the reign of Stephen the Great demonstrates that the figure of this great ruler remained alive in the collective consciousness for centuries after his death. The reverberation of these legends shows how deeply Stephen the Great marked the national consciousness, becoming an emblematic figure in Romanian culture. Among these fascinating stories are those referring to the situation of the ruler after his defeat at the Battle of Valea Seacă on July 26, 1476. In these dramatic circumstances, the defeated ruler, Stephen the Great, met a holy man, the hermit Daniil. To this wise monk, Stephen opened up, confessing his fears and inner experiences. With anxiety in his voice, he asked what he should do next. Daniel’s answer was imbued with wisdom. He advised Stephen to prepare for a new battle, from which he would emerge victorious. Following the advice of Daniil the Hermit, Stephen the Great was able to gather an army from among the people, mobilizing soldiers from different parts of the country. When the Sultan learned that Stephen was coming with an army, he decided to abandon the siege of Neamț Fortress, retreating toward the Danube. The Sultan’s retreat not only saved the fortress, but also demonstrated the power of Stephen’s moral and military resurgence. Voivode Stephen the Great was not only an outstanding military leader, but also a man of justice and Christian love. Through his deeds, he showed that true strength is not limited to victories on the battlefield, but also lies in the ability to forgive and promote reconciliation.
