Summary/Abstract: The research paper examines possible solutions for the integration of volunteering in the university environment. In addition to teaching and research, and in fulfilment of their third mission, universities have a social responsibility to engage with society and contribute to solving significant problems. Volunteering appears to be an essential part of this commitment. Universities can be agents for social change by implementing volunteer programmes, thus linking the academic world with practical impact in society. Best practices from universities that are already fulfilling the third mission through active volunteer programs are examined. The challenges are not only related to the motivation and involvement of young people in volunteering activities, but also to the creation of relevant curricula and the development of a culture of active citizenship among students, including through the promotion and recognition of the role of student associations and clubs. Volunteering is an opportunity for young people not only to acquire knowledge and skills, to build collaborative networks, but also to do something good for society by contributing to the causes they identify with and support. Creating a volunteering programme is not only about designing and constructing a structured document bringing together different volunteering initiatives and identifying forms of volunteering, but also about engaging and collaborating with stakeholders to seek and provide volunteering opportunities. The development of platforms and the use of internal university channels for communication and synchronisation of activities are important, as is the need to ensure the quality and sustainability of volunteering practices. Measuring the effectiveness of the volunteering programme as well as supporting volunteers before, during and after the volunteering experience are also part of programme delivery. Considering different mechanisms for evaluating and recognizing volunteer work, as well as creating a system that encourages student involvement and participation, can prove essential to the success of a volunteer program.
