Summary/Abstract: The focus of this article on informal evaluation is on the use of portfolios, which serve as an effective tool for supporting learning processes. The advantages of evaluating learning processes are highlighted in contrast to the established method of examinations or tests of learning progress. Against this backdrop, current trends in examination practices are examined for their validity, and examiners, especially in foreign language teaching, are encouraged to provide an appropriate framework for both formal and informal methods of assessing performance and skills
