Summary/Abstract: The article presents the sex and marital status structures as well as the demographic characteristics of households and families among the Christian and Jewish residents of Białystok in the second half of the 18th century. The source material for the study was the posthumous inventory of Jan Klemens Branicki’s estate from 1771/72. This source allows for comparisons between the studied communities and a diagnosis of the factors influencing the differentiation of their demographic parameters. The analysis shows that the different demographic indicators of the Christian and Jewish populations of Białystok were significantly influenced by the specific nature of the migration processes of both groups, which resulted mainly from the location in the town of a large magnate’s residence and the court. The cultural differences between the studied communities were also important. In the case of the Jewish population, this was particularly evident in their cultivation of the tradition of „kest”.
