Summary/Abstract: The article documents the scale of famines and epidemics of infectious diseases that occurred during the Galician period (1772–1855) in eight villages located at the northern foothills of Babia Góra, inhabited by the Górale Babiogórscy [Babia Góra Highlanders]. It provides a detailed account of the cholera epidemic of 1831 and the demographic crisis caused by famine and accompanying epidemics in 1847– 1848. The primary sources for the study were parish registers preserved in local parish archives. The article highlights differences in the scale of major food crises and the course of epidemics between individual settlements. It analyses the causes of demographic crises in the studied area, discusses causes of death, and places the scale of these events in the broader context of other regions of Galicia. Furthermore, the course of the demographic crises is compared with data on changing climatic conditions.
