Summary/Abstract: Studying alienation in Sade’s Aline and Valcour, which constitutes the “official” aspect of his work, may seem surprising. Yet, the kingdom of Butua, provides a fertile ground for such analysis, as everything there is marked by alienation. The alienation endured by its people is perverse, as it is projected onto Aline, due to her father, and contaminates her. The alienation, in Sade’s view, an aesthetic and erotic endeavor aimed at prompting the reader to reflect on their own condition.
