Summary/Abstract: Health promotion is the process of creating opportunities for people to improve their own health through self regulated health behavior. Improving life depends on the existence of a healthy environment especially in the work environment and at home; but these are constantly changing factors, so health promotion has to be built on cultural and social changes. Culture is crucial for health, a complex concept involving many elements. It is viewed as a set of subjective values, opposing scientific objectivity, as a set of practices and behaviors determined by customs and habits shared by a group of people. Health education and culture are the foundation of health promotion. They include educational and social activities aimed at increasing health awareness, building healthy habits, increasing health culture in people, leading to improving public health, by creating a healthy environment that supports individual efforts to maintain good health. Discusses the role of health literacy, related to the ability of individuals to understand and competently use health information, on the basis of which to make informed decisions leading to a healthy lifestyle. Health promotion advertises the enhancement and reproduction of public health and, above all, the health of the healthy. In this sense, people are assigned the role of non passive consumers of health care, but are given a chance for healthier lifestyle, through better control over their own health behavior. It is a key concept, without which it would be impossible to understand and develop the general trends and challenges that take place in modern healthcare. Knowledge (health literacy) needs to be up to date, scientifically proven and effective when it relates to personal and/or public health. Each scientific statement needs to be supported by a set of valued studies. The information (the volume of knowledge) should also meet a qualitative assessment to be presented in а such way that it is compliant with the age and general cultural specifics of the individuals in order to be correctly understood. It is necessary to formulate and implement a new strategy for ensuring and improving health literacy from the earliest childhood, leading to the implementation of health promotion in schools.
