Summary/Abstract: Alienation, far from being a simple loss of self, is conceived as a fertile tension between freedom and necessity. After Hegel, Marx, Sartre, Arendt, Kierkegaard, and Honneth, the subject is constructed through exteriorization, recognition, and project. Far from denying freedom, alienation becomes its condition: it is the very place where subjectivity asserts itself in the face of otherness and social structures.
