Summary/Abstract: First employed by Karl Marx in 1844 as part of a critical theory of society attentive to extreme negative experiences, the concept of alienation has since followed a strange historical trajectory. Thus, some current authors seek to reserve it for highlighting less dramatic, but more common, experiences within contemporary societies: experiences of existential malaise and psychological discomfort.
