Summary/Abstract: While Hannah Arendt saw the preservation of privacy in the private domain as a condition for the viability of the public sphere, in some cases sharing one’s experiences and suffering with strangers is a political act. Using the example of the digital activism of patients suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis, we show how gaining the power to act can require exhibiting one’s distress in the public arena.
