Summary/Abstract: Introduction: The aim of this paper is to examine citation patterns in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS) over the past two decades by comparing data from the Scopus and Google Scholar (GS) databases. The study sought to determine whether there are differences in citation patterns between Scopus, as a commercial and selective database, and GS, as a comprehensive and inclusive open-access search engine. It also aimed to identify whether any citation influences within the field operate outside commercial channels of scholarly communication. Methods: The search was conducted using the key phrase “library and information science” with a time limit from 2000 to 2024. The research was carried out on 28 June 2024 in Scopus and GS. Since the GS interface is not suitable for bibliometric analyses, the Publish or Perish software was used. In both databases, the 100 mostcited works were extracted. Results: Among the most-cited works in Scopus, 96% are journal articles, while in GS the share is 86%, with the remainder consisting mainly of books (10%). The average publication year of the most-cited works in both databases is 2010. Based on title words or phrases, the most frequent topics in both databases are analysis, research, information(s) and bibliometric(s). The average number of authors per paper is 2.2 in Scopus and 2.1 in GS. The most frequently cited author in both databases is Birger Hjørland. According to author affiliations in Scopus, institutions from the USA and other Anglophone countries, as well as China, Denmark and the Netherlands, predominate. The most productive country is the USA, followed by Canada, Denmark, the UK, Australia and China. The top three most frequent journals are the same in both databases. Discussion: The findings indicate a substantial, though not complete, overlap in citation patterns between Scopus and GS. Conclusion: Although GS contains a higher share of books, both databases are dominated by journal articles, feature similar title-based thematic patterns, share the same most-cited author, and display nearly identical sets of the most frequent journals. According to this analysis, there are no citation influences within LIS occurring outside commercial publishing channels.
