Summary/Abstract: Today, knowledge has become a critical strategic resource shaping the competitiveness, resilience and long-term development of national economies. Unlike industrial production, traditionally grounded in capital, labor and material inputs, contemporary value creation increasingly relies on knowledge, information, digital technologies, innovation and human creativity. The transition toward a knowledge-based economy transforms production systems by reducing dependence on conventional factors while generating higher productivity, differentiated products, intellectual value and new forms of organizational efficiency. This structural shift is intensified by globalization and rapid advances in information and communication technologies (ICT), artificial intelligence, automation and data-driven decision-making, which accelerate knowledge diffusion and innovation cycles. In this context, knowledge becomes both an economic good and a developmental catalyst characterized by non-rivalry, partial non-excludability, cumulative expansion and the capacity to generate increasing returns. Its strategic role is particularly evident in industries where intangible assets, research capability, learning systems and human capital determine competitive positioning within global value chains. However, the benefits of the knowledge economy are unevenly distributed, exposing structural disparities between developed and developing countries regarding access to education, research infrastructure, technological capacity and institutional support. Therefore, examining the economic nature of knowledge is essential for understanding contemporary patterns of growth, productivity and socio-economic transformation. The purpose of this paper is to provide a concise theoretical analysis of knowledge as an economic good and its role in modern economic development, emphasizing its strategic, cumulative and transformative character. The discussion highlights the implications of the emerging knowledge-based paradigm for enterprises, national economies and public policy, underscoring the need for long-term investment in human capital, innovation systems and inclusive digital development.
