Summary/Abstract: This article examines the transformation of the professional identity of primary school teachers in the Příbram region during the period of state socialism and post-communist transition. Drawing on oral history interviews, it highlights the tension between the symbolic status of teachers as members of the intelligentsia and their marginalized socio-economic reality–described by some respondents as “a proletarian among the intelligentsia.” The study reconstructs lived experiences, survival strategies, and memory patterns in order to understand how professional identity was shaped and reshaped during major political and institutional changes.
