From Demo Tape to Record Label: The Creation and Release of the First Czech Rap Tracks

Summary/Abstract: This study explores the strategies and principles that the first Czech rappers followed in recording and distributing their music. It examines the circumstances of official and unofficial music releases, with a focus on the values held by artists at the time. The thesis covers the period from the first amateur demo recordings to the first CD release, which is perceived by the rap scene as the „real one“. The main sources consist of interviews with narrators who were active members of the first rap generation or who played a key role in the emergence of the hip-hop subculture in the 1990s.
