Summary/Abstract: I'll never learn it because I'll never need it in my life: every high school teacher has probably heard this sentence at least once when students explain why they do not understand the material and do not want to take the time to do so. Such honesty is a clear sign of loss of motivation, which in today's digital age is present to varying degrees at all levels of education. This article focuses on learning and teaching German as a foreign language in high school education and seeks to answer the question of what is meant by learning and teaching motivation, how this can be positively influenced, and to what extent innovative pedagogical approaches such as design thinking offer useful applications for increasing it.
