Summary/Abstract: The present paper leads to discover two basic dichotomies as the foundations of science. Their relevance is proved through an analysis of the main categories in history of science, the history of classical Mechanics by taking into account Lazare Carnot’s mechanics and its anticipation, Leibniz’s. Two main lines of historical development result. The relevance of the two dichotomies is proved also by the history of Western philosophy; that leads to re-evaluate Leibniz's philosophy of science. Also, the historical development of modern physics shows their relevance. The implications for the relationship ethics and science are drawn.
