Summary/Abstract: The submitted paper focuses on the lexicon of Slovak dialects, specifically on words denoting physical (or physiological) characteristics of people that begin with the consonant m. It presents dialectal expressions referring to various aspects of physical appearance – from body constitution (height, weight) and observable developmental stages (infant, child, young person) to features of outward appearance such as neglected look, skin color, disguise, or overall grooming. The study also explores the evaluation of individual physical traits (particularly facial ones – freckles, blinking, cleft lips, etc.), visible indicators of health (illness, weakness), and manifestations of certain behavioral tendencies (such as inclination to smoking or alcohol consumption, unclear speech, or left-handedness). A subsequent paper will continue this research by offering an overview of dialectal vocabulary describing mental (psychological) characteristics of individuals and their placement within cultural and social structures.
