Syntax and economy: The verb parecer and related issues

Summary/Abstract: Given its nature as an instrument of communication, a functional study of language requires to consider all the factors that make up the syntactic structure of the message. The principle of economy leads to saving elements that the speaker deduces from the context or culture. The principle of cost-effectiveness leads to making the best use of available resources. This paper will deal with some specific cases where these principles condition the final character of the message. In particular, it will deal with internal constituents, omitted in the expression of the message but present in it, constituents which, as such, have not been regularly considered.
