Summary/Abstract: This article examines the works of Colombian author Juan Gabriel Vásquez, focusing on his use of archives and materiality to address memory, history, and identity. His novels and essays highlight distortion, uncertainty, and enquiry, presenting history as subjective and fragmented. While rooted in Colombian and Latin American traditions, his writing departs from conventional fiction by integrating autobiographical elements and engaging historical realities. The analysis underscores Vásquez’s intimate relation to the past, where objects and landscapes shape his storytelling. The heterogeneity of his archives, from textual to material, reveals history’s dynamic, negotiable, and metafictional dimensions.
