Summary/Abstract: This paper examines various aspects of historical variation in general Spanish, especially some cases of grammatical simplification found in American variants of the language. Koinization theory predicts that languages with colonial expansion exhibit a strong tendency toward leveling. It is shown here how, as many morphological redundancies and complex construction patterns disappear, redundancy decreases, and numerous phenomena of grammatical overcharacterization occur to compensate for this loss.
