Summary/Abstract: After a brief introduction to the life and work of Concepción Saiz, this paper analyses the report entitled La enseñanza de la lengua materna (= The Teaching of the Mother Tongue), published in 1909 by this Galician teacher, a great defender of the right of women to equal education. This report was the result of her study trip to London in 1908, financed by the “Junta para Ampliación de Estudios” (“Board for the Extension of Studies”), with the aim of visiting a series of schools in that city and trying to use what she had learned to modernise the methods of teaching the Spanish language in Spain.
