Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the role of general nouns functioning as encapsulators in two journalistic subgenres: news and sports. Nominal encapsulators are cohesive markers used in specialized languages to condense textual sequences, enabling evaluation or recategorization of content and imposing a subjective interpretation on the reader. Our corpus-based study explores the distribution of lexical-semantic classes of encapsulators in recent press articles, following Schmid’s taxonomy (2000) and later research. The main goal is to test whether the informational profile of news journalism corresponds to factual cohesive markers. The study also highlights differences between news and sports articles. Finally, the quantitative results are compared with findings on nominal encapsulation in other specialized discourses.
