Summary/Abstract: Nazi Germany launched its invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia on April 6, 1941. Over the following twelve days, the German army rapidly overran the Yugoslav territory. Before and during the invasion, the German media conducted an aggressive propaganda campaign portraying the Serbian political and military elites of the Yugoslav state as conspiratorial, perfidious, and venal. The Völkischer Beobachter, the official newspaper of the Nazi Party, was at the forefront of this campaign. This paper presents the writings of the Viennese edition of the Völkischer Beobachter in chronological order, from Yugoslavia’s accession to the Tripartite Pact to Hitler’s triumphant speech before the Nazi German Reichstag, covering the period from March 25 to May 4, 1941. Finally, it identifies the most frequently covered topics in the German anti-Yugoslav and anti-Serb propaganda and presents an analysis of how the German press justified the invasion of Yugoslavia.
