Summary/Abstract: This article studies the semantics and theological implications of the Greek and Hebrew terms for ‘useful’ and ‘usefulness’ as they are employed in Scripture. In particular, the meaning of usefulness as a Christian virtue is analysed as it relates to the concepts of ‘goodness,’ ‘kindness’ and ‘mercy.’ The importance of being useful to God and one’s neighbour springs from the Christological foundation of this virtue and its soteriological aspects. It is ‘in Christ Jesus’ and by the Holy Spirit that the believer is empowered to live a truly useful life in conformity with the character and behaviour of their Saviour.
