Summary/Abstract: In the late 1930s, the expanded pastoral activity of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church gained strength as a result of the internal theological conviction of its own mission. A very indicative example in this regard is the creation of the “Church-Social Care for Domestic Servants in Bulgaria”. The initiative was developed by the Sofia Orthodox Christian Brotherhood “St. Basil the Great” in 1935 after it turned out that 95% of prostitutes in the capital were former or current maidservants. The brotherhood also began to cooperate with the state authorities and for the period 1935 – 1939 expanded its activities by building its own home. Medical care was provided there. The home provided shelter and police protection to maidservants who were in conflict with their parents or employers. During this period, about 15,000 women in the capital alone benefited from the services of this initiative.
