Summary/Abstract: The issue concerning the potential closure of the Faculty of Theology arose in 1932, during the years of the Great Depression. Then the government of the People's Bloc sought to balance the state budget by imposing substantial cuts across nearly all sectors, including higher education. Due to the broad public support for preserving the Faculty and the ongoing dialogue between the Holy Synod and the government, the closure was ultimately averted. In this way, the Faculty of Theology successfully passed its first major test and affirmed the viability and significance of theological scholarship in Bulgaria.
